Just some snapshots
Just some homely snaps from the last few days. I downloaded these off the camera last night, I'd forgotten what was on there. Looking at these anyone would think that all Alex wears is stripes.
Alex still has an upset tummy so we haven't been doing anything very exciting. Just lots of nappy changes and baths. He isn't sick but he isn't able to eat normal solids yet so we're keeping quiet to save his energy. We missed out on playgroup today and camera club last night.
Alex is happy though. Yesterday we had a good pretend play with his teddies. Previously when I tried pretend games he watched me and not the teddies. Yesterday he was watching the teddies and having a good laugh at them walking, talking and cuddling. He kept handing me the ones he wanted me to make walk and talk.
Alex loves the TV. Thankfully it's not on very often. He gets to watch something like Playschool most days but the TV doesn't stay on. The problem is he likes to watch it with his hands and even his face pressed to the glass. Here's a photo of him watching TV like this even when it wasn't on. That's his reflection in the glass.
Here's a photo of Tilly. It looks like she is sitting quietly but really she was trying to catch a fly or something only she could see. She knows she isn't allowed up there so she stopped as soon as she saw me and tried to look innocent.
Here's Alex on the move. He had his mouth stuffed with bread and a big bit hanging out. I grabbed the camera but forgot to check the settings. I had it set for a slow shot so I caught him in 'action'. Naturally he managed to drop the excess bread before I took the photo so I missed the whole funny face I was after but I like this shot.
These shots were taken when Alex woke up after a late nap. I don't know why I had the camera and flash in my hand when he woke up but a captive subject was too good to miss. I practiced bouncing my flash from all angles. There's some funny yellow colouring to the shadows in these shots which is caused by his bedroom light which is a big yellow sun.
Check out those beautiful curls :)
I love this because you can see his first molar. The second one has just come through on the other side but it's only just a little white dot so far.
It's interesting to see how much he has grown compared to these photos taken at the beginning of the year (with much nicer natural light).
Here's a shot which shows his yellow sun light and his blue dragonfly night light.

Slip sliding away...
Another day of changing nappies.
Alex has a bit of a runny bum bug so we've been going through nappies like crazy since Saturday night. He is fine though. He is keeping his fluids up and is happy but now he is hungry and it's hard to find food that doesn't go straight through him. It's strange after all this time of obsessing about getting enough food into him, to find myself withholding food. Anyway he'll be fine. It looks like we'll be missing tomorrow nights camera club committee meeting though.
Mom and Dad brought Jennifer over to meet Alex yesterday. They went to Ikea first but we missed out because I'm trying to keep Alex a little quiet while he isn't eating, to save his strength. Alex of course loved having visitors and so did Tilly.
Mom brought over my slide film she had developed for me which I was excited about. I started this film the beginning of the year and it's taken me this long to finish it. It's the old story of film, when I have limited shots and am paying for film it takes me ages to finish a film. It didn't help that the camera broke in the middle of the roll. Well the focus went first early on but by the middle of the roll the camera was completely stuffed so I bought a new second hand camera and transfered the film over. The old camera was a Pentax and the new old camera is a Canon. It's interesting to see the difference in the slides. The first lot from the Pentax all look overexposed (and not all in focus) and the second lot have much stronger colours and may be underexposed. The overexposed shots could be a results of the problems I was having with the camera and they may have all been effected by the stuffing around we did with the lens off trying to diagnose the fault before we pulled the film out. The shots that look underexposed may not be once there's a projector behind them but I don't have a projector so I just don't know. I've scanned them on my flatbed scanner which doesn't give very good results. They all came out red from the scanner. Most of the shots were just snaps I took to finish off the film so I could find out if any of it worked but there's some a I really like.
It certainly makes me appreciate the ease of digital cameras but I like the challenge of slides. Now I know my new camera works I can load up another slide film and try to get some good shots.

I've kept them as close to the originals as possible but had to fix the colour from the scanner and the colours still look wrong to me.

And look how young he was in this one. This shows how old the film was. This was last summer. I took this when I first suspected the camera was playing up. I needed to run off a few shots to test the camera so I pointed it at Alex with the on camera flash and just snapped.
These are from the 'use-up-the-film' shots during our garden makeover.
That's the end of the rake he was chewing on and thats a pebble he is putting in his mouth. Don't worry as soon as I realised what he was up to I stopped him.
Check out his new drinking technique. Anyone would think he has his Grandads drinking problem.

Backyard makeover
Ok it's about time I covered the October long weekend before I get too far behind. This was the weekend of our garden make over.
Before we went away for our Anniversary on the Friday night we had a 6 cubic meter skip delivered. An early Christmas pressy from Graham's Mom and her partner, along with their services. While we were breakfasting at Loxley on Saturday they were at our place early, stripping out our back garden. We got home to a whole new, spacious yard with turf and it was almost finished.
Our back yard was very over grown so we had made the decision that it all could go, with the exception of the Grevilleas, the Camellia and my coffee plant. All the water thirsty tropicals could go and all the weeds of course. There was a deep garden bed all along the fence and in the back corner there were about 5 generations of different plants progressively planted out from the corner so a large part of the yard was lost to plants we couldn't even see.
I didn't think to take before shots before they started so I went back and searched the old camera files from a few years ago and found these. You can see how overgrown it was then and it just got worse.
These photos were actually of the jungle cats.
On Sunday the in-laws came back to finish the job and my parents came over too. We had to order another skip and we filled Dad's ute too.
Here's some photos of the work in progress and the workers. Oh and Alex too. He was very helpful and really enjoyed playing in the dirt. He had to wear his baby legs (the leg warmer things) to protect his legs. He had a ball walking, running and stumbling around. He even wore holes in his shoes! He wasn't too sure about his Grumpa's ute though.

The end result, the garden looks amazing. I can't believe how much space we have, particularly in the back corner. These are just some quickly stitched shots but you can see from the green line of turf just how far the old garden beds came in. Alex is going to love having all this space to play in. The turf is growing well and has had it's first mow and I have my new Grevillea in the corner which will hopefully grow up to give us a bit of cover. The old brick BBQ is gone too. We never used it because we have another BBQ.
These are from the end of day one with the BBQ still in place, one side of the big tree still to clear and a pile of turf still to lay in the back corner.
This is the end result day two.
Here's the team at the end of the day. All hot, tired and dirty. Even Alex.

and here's the tulips Graham gave me for our anniversary. I quickly grabbed a photo on one of my trips in and out of the house with Alex. Glad I did because by the end of the day they were all droopy.
